Friends and Lovers by Gloria Loring and Carl Anderson (1986)
In 1980, Gloria Loring (at the time the wife of actor Alan Thicke) was a singer-actress who was playing Liz Chandler on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. Her character was a lounge singer. In 1985, Carl Anderson (Broadway actor) appeared on Days to perform Friends and Lovers. Days fans adored the song.
Friends and Lovers eventually ended up on Anderson’s self-titled Epic Records’ album and Loring’s self-titled Atlantic Records’ album. The song peaked at number two for two weeks in the fall of 1986. (1986 would prove to be Loring’s final year on Days.) Loring continued recording but failed to make an impact on the charts and continued sporadic acting roles. In 2012, she released a spiritual autobiography Coincidence Is God’s Way of Remaining Anonymous. (Loring and Thicke divorced in 1983.)
Anderson also continued recording and performing on Broadway. In 1992 he married Veronica Porsche-Ali, ex-wife of boxing legend Muhammad Ali. In February 2004, Anderson died of leukemia.
