Baker Street (United, 1978)
Written and recorded by Scottish singer/songwriter Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street hit #2 on American pop chart for six weeks behind Andy Gibb’s Shadow Dancing. Baker Street was a #1 single though in Canada, Australia, South Africa and on the American Cash Box chart. (It hit #3 in the UK.) Rafferty won the 1978 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. As of October 2010, Baker Street was recognised by the BMI for surpassing five million performances worldwide. It was awarded Gold certification twice by the BPI in the UK — on April 1, 1978 and July 22, 2013. It was named after Baker Street in London and off his second solo album, City to City. It is best known for its saxophone riff.
