The Ketchup Song (Asereje) Las Ketchup (Altra Moda/Columbia/Sony, 2002)
Despite what it titles suggests, The Ketchup Song is not about ketchup at all. (Oh Mon Dieu!) It tells the story of a pimp-like gypsy with mystical qualities. After its release, controversy soon followed suggesting The Ketchup Song referenced Satanism, the devil and the inferno.
What The Ketchup Song is for sure is a Latin dance-pop one hit wonder recorded by the Spanish pop group Las Ketchup. It was released in June 2002 as their debut song from their debut album, Hijas del Tomate. (The girls are obsessed with ketchup!) There are three versions of The Ketchup Song: a Spanish version, a Spanglish (mixture of English and Spanish) and a Portuguese. The nonsensical chorus is identical in all three versions. The Ketchup Song has sold over 7 million copies and hit #1 on 32 charts. It went top 10 in a further four countries (Australia #5, Austria #2, Ireland #3 and #8 UK). It worst outing was in the U.S. on the Hot 100. It hit a dismal #54.
