Hold On, I’m Comin (Stax/Atlantic, 1966)

Hold On, I’m Comin is the 1966 debut album by soul album duo Sam & Dave. Hold On, I’m Comin reached #1 on the R&B album chart and #45 on the Top LPs chart (which turned into the Hot 200 album chart as it is currently named). The title track from the album peaked at #1 on the Black Singles chart and #21 on the Hot 100 (Pop) chart. The follow up single, You Don’t Know Like I Know peaked at #7 (on the Black Singles) and #90 (on the Hot 100).

Sam and Dave were Sam Moore and Dave Prater. They have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. They are the most successful soul duo that brought the sounds of the black gospel church to pop music. Except for Aretha Franklin, no soul act during Sam & Dave’s years at Stax Records (1965-1968) had more consistent R&B chart success, including 10 consecutive top 20 singles and 3 consecutive top 10 LPs. Their crossover chart appeal helped to pave the way for the acceptance of soul music by white pop audiences.
