Dancin Guy (MCA, 2000)

Guy was formed in 1987 in Harlem, New York and are most associated with the new jack swing genre that took over the music style in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The boys of Guy (Teddy Riley, brothers Aaron and Damion Hall) did find mainstream success in this time frame. Their self-titled debut album peaked at #27 (#1 on the R&B Album chart) in 1988. It was only the final single, I Like that hit the Hot 100 to peak at #70. Groove Me, Teddy’s Jam and I Like were all top five hits on the R&B chart (#4, #5 and #2 respectively). Their second album, The Future topped the R&B chart, but peaked at #16 on the Hot 200 album chart. The album’s first two singles were modest hits on the Hot 100. Wanna Get With U and Let’s Chill peaked at #50 and #41 respectively. They continued to fare better on the R&B charts. Wanna Get With U peaked at #4; Let’s Chill at #3, Do Me Right at #2 and D-O-G Me Out peaked at #8.

What turned out to be Guy’s final album was Guy III. Released in January 2000, the album’s first single, Dancin became their highest charting single on the Hot 100, peaking at #22 (their only top 40 appearance). On the R&B chart, it peaked at #4.

There was a 10-year gap between their second and third albums. The Future was released in 1990. Guy III was released in 2000. During the 90s decade, Riley went to write and produce for other musical icons, including Heavy D, Blackstreet, Bobby Brown and Michael Jackson. The Hall brothers went on to their solo careers.
