The Return of Bruno (Motown, 1987)
Did you know that in the late 1980s actor Bruce Willis had a recording contract with, of all companies, Motown? Well he did. In 1987, Willis released his debut album, an eclectic mix of R&B (??) and pop songs and had backing vocals by Booker T. Jones, the Pointer Sisters and the Temptations. I know. The album was a companion piece for an HBO special of the same name which aired shortly after the January 20, 1987 release date. The Return of Bruno peaked at #14 on Billboard’s album chart. Respect Yourself was a duet with June Pointer and had backing vocals from her Sisters that peaked at #5 in the U.S. and #7 in the UK. Follow up singles Young Blood and Under the Boardwalk didn’t chart that well in the U.S. (#68 and #59), but the cover of Under the Boardwalk peaked at #2 in the UK and became the UK’s 12th best-selling single of 1987. Willis had a second album in 1989, If It Don’t Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger.
