Rear Window (Paramount, 1954)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Rear Window was a 1954 American mystery thriller film based on American novelist Cornell Wollrich’s 1942 short story, “It Had to be Murder.” Rear Window starred James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Wendell Corey, Thelma Ritter and Raymond Burr. Rear Window is considered to be one of Hitchcock’s best as well as one of the greatest movies ever made. Rear Window was rewarded with four Oscar nominations. In 1997, it was selected for the National Film Registry for preservation.
After breaking his leg, professional photographer L.B. Jeffries (Stewart) is confined to a wheelchair in his Greenwich Village apartment. Looking out his rear window, he spies on his neighbors. Made for a measly $1 million, Rear Window made back almost $37 million.
