Lovesexy (Paisley Park/Warner Brothers, 1987)
Lovesexy was Prince’s tenth studio album and was a substitute record released after the last minute cancellation of the infamous Black Album. Lovesexy was recorded in just seven weeks and received mixed reviews. Though it was Prince’s least successful album since 1980 in the U.S., it was his first #1 album in the UK and all three singles Alphabet St., Glam Slam and I Wish U Heaven were top 30 hits.
The cover art featured Prince sitting naked on a flower, strategically covering both his upper and lower parts. Still the cover was banned. Some stores chose to wrap the album in black paper which was confused with the all-black cover of The Black Album. (The Black Album was originally scheduled to be released at the time of Lovesexy but at the last minute was cancelled by Prince. It was his response to the criticism that he had become too pop-oriented and this was his attempt to regain his black audience. The Black Album was eventually released in 1994 as his sixteenth album.)
