Nothing Comapres 2 U by Sinead O’Connor (Chrysalis, 1990)
Originally intended for The Family, Prince’s band, O’Connor’s manager Fachtna O’Kelly introduced the idea for the cover.
O’Connor has released her debut album The Lion and the Cobra in 1987. But it was this song off her album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got (1990) that sent her into superstardom. Unfortunately, she hated and couldn’t handle the fame and the subsequent commercialization of her music and she began making controversial political statements (such as the infamous tearing up the Pope’s picture). O’Connor quickly faded from the spotlight (which probably ended up being her saving grace). She refused to attend the Grammy awards despite the fact that she was nominated for four awards.
She returned to Dublin, suffered a nervous breakdown and attempted suicide. In 1994,O’Connor returned to music by releasing Universal Mother, a critical hit but commercial failure. In 2000, she issued her first full-length album in six years, Faith and Courage.
O’Connor continues to record and release material. Her most recent — her ninth album How About I Be Me (and you by you)? was released in 2012.
