Hombre (20th Century Fox, 1967)
Hombre was a 1967 revisionist western film based on the novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard. The film was directed by Martin Ritt and starred Paul Newman, Fredric March, Richard Boone, Martin Balsam and Diane Cilento. Hombre was also soap opera veteran David Canary’s first film role. (He played Lamar Dean.)
In late 19th century Arizona, an Apache-raised white man, John Russell (Newman) faces prejudice in the white world after he returns for his inheritance (a gold watch and a boarding house) after his father’s death.
Produced for just under $6 million, Hombre brought in $12 million.
