Christina Grimmie (March 12, 1994 – June 10, 2016)
Christina Victoria Grimmie was a former YouTuber known for covering hit songs until 2014 when she finished in the third place of season 6 (2014) of The Voice. In 2011, she released a debut EP, Find Me. A full length album, With Love was released in 2013. A second EP, Side A was released in 2016. A posthumous EP, Side B and her final full length album, All is Vanity were released in 2017.
On the evening of June 10, 2016, Grimmie performed at the Plaza Live in Orlando, Florida. After her concert ended at 10 pm, she was signing autographs outside the main entrance. Less than a half hour later, 27 year old Kevin James Loibi shot Grimmie four times as she was opening up her arms to hug him. Loibi was tackled by her brother but was able to get away and shot himself dead. Just before 11 pm, Grimmie was pronounced dead at the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Loibi had brought with him (from his home in St. Petersburg, Florida, two handguns, two extra magazines of ammunition and a large hunting knife. While his family was unaware of Loibi’s obsession with Grimmie, his co-workers and friends were well aware, as Loibi was said to have tried to make himself more attractive for Grimmie with recent weight loss, hair plugs and eye surgery. Grimmie was only 22 years old.
In some tragic side notes, the night after Grimmie’s murder, only four miles away at the Pulse gay nightclub, 29-year-old Omar Mateen killed 46 people and wounded 53 others in a terrorist attack. Mateen was shot and killed by Orlando police after a three-hour standoff. The shootings were not connected to each other in any way. In September 2018, Grimmie’s mother Tina Grimmie lost her battle to cancer. (Below is a photo of Grimmie, her mother and brother.)
