Play That Funky Music (Epic, 1976)
Written by Rob Parissi, lead singer for the American funk rock band Wild Cherry, Play That Funky Music hit the top of the Pop and R&B charts in the U.S. It was certified Platinum and remains the band’s only top 40 hit. It was their second single off their debut self-titled album.
In 1989, American rapper released an interpretation of the song with the B-Side being Ice Ice Baby. On the strength of Play That Funky Music, he signed a record deal with SBK Records. Parissi was not credited and was later awarded $500,000 in a copyright infringement lawsuit. When a disc jockey accidentally played Ice Ice Baby instead of Play That Funky Music, Vanilla Ice’s career took off anyway.
