24 Hour Party People (Pathe, UK/United Artists, U.S., 2002)

This biopic tells the story of Manchester (England) TV and music impresario Tony Wilson (played by Steve Coogan). The film chronicled the music during a golden time for Manchester music when Joy Division, New Order, the Happy Mondays and so many more were flying high. (In fact, it could be argued that the music is the real star of this story.) Also chronicled was the rise of the acid house music scene. The question remains how truthful it was. Wilson (the real one) is the first to admit that when you have a choice between printing the truth or the legend, you should go with the legend. So take from that what you will. The film was first screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. It made $2.8 million.
