Easter (Arista, 1978)
Easter was the third studio album by the Patti Smith Group. Easter is regarded as the group’s breakthrough thanks to the single Because the Night. Easter used a variety of musical styles, from rock and roll, folk, spoken word and pop. It is also the only album from the 1970s not to feature pianist Richard Sohl. He had been sick and was unable to participate in the recording of the album. Vocalist Patti Smith herself had recently suffered a neck injury while touring for their previous album Radio Ethiopia and this was their first album after that injury. Easter was certified Silver in the UK. It peaked at #10 in Norway; #16 in the UK and #20 on Billboard’s Pop Albums chart.
The singles from Easter were Because the Night and Privilege (Set Me Free). Because the Night was written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith. It peaked at #5 in the UK and #13 in the U.S. Privilege (Set Me Free) was originally titled Free Me and was written by Mel London and Mike Leander for the 1967 film Privilege. Smith’s version peaked at #13 in Ireland and #72 in the UK.
