Leg Makeup (1940s)

In 1941, the U.S. was forced to ban silk stockings after Japan cut off America’s supply of silk during World War II. (Parachute production was deemed more important than the vanity of American women.) Not to be deterred or whispered about for loose morals, American women had to resort to faking hosiery. They rubbed liquid foundation onto their legs to simulate the color of pantyhose then used an eyebrow pencil to draw a “seam” up the back of their legs. The things ladies have to do for fashion!
