Coma (MGM, 1978)
Coma is a suspense film based on a 1977 novel of the same name by Robin Cook. Coma was directed by Michael Crichton and starred Genevieve Bujold, Michael Douglas, Elizabeth Ashley, Richard Wildmark and Rip Torn. Tom Selleck (in his first theatrical appearance), Lois Chiles and Ed Harris have small roles. In September 2012, A&E adapted Coma into a two-part miniseries.
Dr. Susan Wheeler (Bujold) is a surgical resident at Boston Memorial Hospital. She is devastated when a patient (and her best friend) is pronounced brain dead and lapses into a coma after some minor surgery at the hospital. Looking at the records, she discovers other young people have experienced similar fates after operations in the same operating theatres and that after the comatose bodies were moved to a remote facility called the Jefferson Institute.
