Children of the Corn (New World Pictures, 1984)

Based on the 1977 short story of the same name, written by American horror master Stephen King, the 1984 Children of the Corn film was directed by Fritz Kiersch and starred Peter Horton and Linda Hamilton. Set in the fictitious town of Gatlin, Nebraska, a malevolent entity referred to as “He Who Walks Behind the Rows” entices the children of the town to ritually murder the adults to ensure a successful corn harvest.

Originally King wrote the original draft of the screenplay, but his version of his own work was turned down for George Goldsmith’s screenplay. (His version was more violent and had a conventional narrative.) Children of the Corn has received an astounding 8(!) sequels. (Guess King shouldn’t be too upset…)
