Hop on Pop was written by Dr. Seuss and is subtitled “The Simplest Seuss for Youngest Use.”
It is a collection of several short poems about a variety of characters. It was designed to introduce basic phonics to children.

In 2001, Publishers Weekly published a list of all-time best-selling hardcover books for children. Hop On Pop came in at #16. In 2007, in an online poll by the National Education Association, they included Hop on Pop on their list of the “Teachers Top 100 Books for Children”. Former First Lady Laura Bush listed Hop on Pop as her favorite book in a 2006 Wall Street Journal article.
