Love is Blue Paul Mauriat and his orchestra (Philips, 1968)

In 1967, Andre Popp composed the music while Pierre Cour wrote the lyrics for L’amour est bleu. Greek singer Vicky Leandros performed the song in French as the Luxembourgian entry for the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest. L’amour est bleu describes the pleasures and pain of love in terms of colors (blue and grey) then elements (water and wind). The English language lyrics, written by Brian Blackburn, focus on colors only (blue, grey, red, green and black).

In later 1967 French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat conducted an “easy listening” instrumental version that hit #1 in the U.S. for five weeks. Love is Blue is the only number one hit by a French artist to hit Billboard’s Hot 100. Mauriat’s version of Love is Blue is the best known version of the song in the U.S.
