Dance Marathons (1920s)

Dance marathons today are used as fundraisers for charitable causes. However, back in the 1920s when they first began, dance marathons were competitive events that usually offered a cash prize (and maybe a promise of relative fame). During the Depression era, they were often staged by municipalities as a diversion from the dreariness that was the reality of American life.
