As We Lay Shirley Murdock (Elektra, 1986)

Born May 22, 1957 in Toledo, Ohio, Shirley Murdock started out singing gospel music (she has since returned to it professionally). In the early 1980s, singer Roger Troutman hired Murdock as a backup singer for his family’s band Zapp. This quickly led to a record deal with Elektra. Her self-titled debut album’s third single was her only hit to hit the Hot 100; As We Lay hit #23 and #5 on the R&B chart. It is still her best known hit. Her album was certified Gold. She released another two R&B albums (A Woman’s Point of View — 1988 and Let There Be Love — 1991) before switching back to gospel music. Her 2002 debut gospel album was entitled Home. Her most recent album was in 2007, Soulfood. Even though she’s had three other singles hit the top ten on the R&B chart, Murdock hasn’t really gained much traction on the charts. She has turned to acting; touring in 2000 in the play Be Careful What You Pray For with Cuba Gooding Jr. and in the 2009 play A Mother’s Prayer alongside Robin Givens.
