Over the Edge (Orion, 1979)
Over the Edge was a coming-of-age drama that followed the lives of a group of teens living in a (fictional) planned community. The themes of Over the Edge include teenage rebellion and drug and alcohol abuse by junior high school students. This film is said to be the inspiration for the music videos Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana and Evil Eye by Fu Manchu. Over the Edge was inspired by actual events that had
taken place in Foster City, California (a planned city in San Mateo county) in the early 1970s.
Due to the negative publicity of recent youth gang films The Warriors and Boulevard Nights, Over the Edge had a limited release. Over the Edge starred 14-year-old Matt Dillon in his feature film debut.
