Grace Jeff Buckley (Columbia, 1994)
Grace was Jeff Buckley’s only completed full length album. It was slow to sell, but gradually picked up steam. It has sold over 2 million copies worldwide. The four singles from the album were Grace, Last Goodbye, So Real and Eternal Life. Only Last Goodbye hit the charts — #19 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks and #54 on the UK Singles charts. Grace contained Buckley’s cover of Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. It remains one of Buckley’s most well-known recordings. It hit #2 on the UK Singles chart in 2008.
On May 27, 1997, Buckley was in Memphis, Tennessee waiting for his band to get in from New York. He decided to go for an evening swim in the Wolf River. He drowned (fully clothed) due to becoming caught in the wake of a passing boat. His body was recovered June 4. At the time of his passing, Buckley was recording for his follow-up album, My Sweetheart The Drunk. Buckley was only 30 years old.
