Believe It or Not Joey Scarbury (Elektra, 1981)
Believe it or Not was the theme song for the TV series, The Greatest American Hero, a dramedy that aired on ABC from 1981 to 1983 and starred William Katt, Robert Culp and Connie Sellecca. It peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 in August 1981.
Joey Scarbury was 14 when he scored his first record deal. His first single, She Never Smiles Anymore, was a complete failure and the deal dissolved. He switched to being a backup singer. He had a minor hit Mixed Up Guy in 1971. By the end of the decade he was working for record producer/composer Mike Post. This gave him the opportunity to record Believe it or Not. After the show’s debut, they rushed out an album, American’s Greatest Hero that sold fairly well. The second single When She Dances peaked at #49. He continued to record TV theme songs in the 80s, but didn’t re-appear on the charts.
Currently, Scarbury still records sporadically but America’s Greatest Hero remains his only full-length album.
I will always remember this song as being George’s answering machine message, on Seinfeld, “The Susie” episode from season 8.
