Boy by U2 (Island, 1980)
Boy was Irish band U2’s debut album and focused on the thoughts and frustrations of adolescence. The second single I Will Follow is about the death of Bono’s mother when he was 13. The lead single was A Day Without Me.
Initially, the album didn’t generate a lot of attention, though I Will Follow became a hit on college radio. Though the critics were mainly positive, it wasn’t until U2 achieved a little but more fame that Boy became appreciated.
The boy featured on the album cover is Peter Rowen, the brother of one of Bono’s friends. Rowen also appeared on Early Demos (1978), Three, War (their third studio album) and their first greatest hits compilation, The Best of 1980-1999.
