Live Through This by Hole (Geffen, 1994)
This album was aptly named. Only four days before the album’s 1994 release (April 12), Kurt Cobain (lead singer of Nirvana) was found dead in his home. Why is this important? Hole’s lead singer is Courtney Love and she was Cobain’s wife. In addition, this was Hole’s only album to feature bassist Kristen Pfaff before her death in June 1994.
Live Through This was Hole’s second album and reflected the fact that Love had to deal with the pressures of fame as well as her role as a wife and mother. Live Through This was a critical darling and the public agreed. Within a year, it had reached multi-platinum status and sold over 2 million copies worldwide. Today, Live Through This is considered to be a classic contemporary alternative rock album.
None of the singles hit the Hot 100, but they did moderately well on the Modern Rock chart. Live Through This spawned four singles: Miss World (#13), Doll Parts (#4), Violet (#29) and Softer, Softest (#32). In addition, the singles did moderately well in the UK. Miss World hit #64, Doll Parts hit #16 and Violet hit #17.
