Rapper’s Delight by Sugarhill Gang (Sugarhill, 1980)

Rapper’s Delight was not the first single to feature rapping, but it is considered to be the song that first popularized hip hop in the U.S. and around the world. In 2011, Rapper’s Delight was honored by becoming preserved into the National Recording Registry. Incredibly, Rapper’s Delight was recorded in a single take.

Rapper’s Delight peaked at only #36 on the Hot 100 (but hit #4 on the Hot Soul Singles chart). The single went to the top of the Canadian and Dutch charts and hit #3 in the UK. Rapper’s Delight has sold over 5 million copies, but has never received its U.S. Diamond certification. Sugarhill was such a small, independent label that they didn’t hire outside accountants to go through their books. Rapper’s Delight has been certified Gold in Spain.
