Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles (Island, 1979)
Video Killed the Radio Star was a collaboration written by members (Trevor Horn, Geoff Downs and Bruce Woolley) of two different bands in 1978. Bruce Woolley and the Camera Club recorded it and released it first for their album English Garden, Later, the Buggles (of which Horns and Downs belonged), a British synthpop/new wave band recorded it for their debut album The Age of Plastic.
When Video was first written Woolley was technically a member of The Buggles, but he left shortly after while they were still recording for The Age of Plastic (so the song was never meant to be “shared” between the bands) in order to form his own band, The Camera Club.
Video was The Buggles’ second single release and only peaked at #40 in the U.S. The song hit #1 in Australia, Austria, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
Perhaps it’s best known claim to fame is Video was the first music video ever shown on MTV when it debuted on August 1, 1981.
