Urkel-Os (Ralston, 1991)

This cereal was based on the character Steve Urkel from the ABC sitcom, Family Matters, which ran from 1989 to 1997 (then moved to CBS for the 1997-1998 season). Originally, Urkel was only supposed to appear in one episode, but audiences fell in love with that squeaky voiced nerd and his catchphrase “Did I do that?” has become a part of pop culture’s lexicon. Urkel also caused a shift on Family Matters as they tried to capitalize on Urkel’s popularity.

Part of this popularity led to the introduction of Urkel-Os in 1991. It was a strawberry and banana flavored cereal of yellow and red loop pieces. Nine different pictures of Urkel were spread over the fronts, sides and backs of the boxes. Urkel’s popularity never waned on the show and, even today, Jaleel White, who portrayed Urkel, struggles to shake off Urkel’s persona, but Urkel-Os popularity did wane. Quickly, in fact. It’s been said Urkel-Os tasted weird and very artificial.
