Cars by Gary Numan (Beggars Barquet, 1979)

This new wave staple, by UK artists Gary Numan was from the album, The Pleasure Principle. Cars went to #1 in both Canada and the UK; #5 in Ireland and #9 in Australia and the U.S. It also hit the Belgium (#28), German (#45) and New Zealand (#18) music charts.

Numan is considered a pioneer of commercial electronic music. His trademark style came from a bout of acne. Before an appearance on Top of the Pops, they coated his face with white makeup to camouflage the spots and caked his eyes with black to stand out. His stage presence, being described as “wooden” comes from extreme self consciousness. His fans were known as “Numanoids.”

Numan continues to record and perform. His most recent album was released worldwide in October 2013, Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind). He published his autobiography, Praying to the Aliens in 1997. Numan currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three children.
