“Not!” (80s through the 90s)
“Not!” became the sarcastic catchphrase in 90s North America. To use it properly, it must follow a declaration. For example: “I love that shirt on you….not!” which, in reality, meant that you didn’t love the shirt at all.
“Not!” became such a fixture in conversations that it was the topic of a Saturday Night Live skit and was peppered throughout the 1992 film Wayne’s World. If you can believe it, “Not!” was selected as the 1992 Word of the Year by the American Dialect Society. The 2006 film Borat tried to revive its popularity.
