Wipe Out by the Surfaris (Dot, 1963)

Wipe Out is an instrumental song written by Bob Berryhill, Pat Connolly, Jim Fuller and Ron Wilson. The song propelled the Surfaris to international stardom.

Wipe Out was intended to be the B-side to Surfer Joe sung by Ron Wilson. While recording the song one of the Surfaris suggested as a gimmick to begin the song with a simulated wipe out. Before the song starts a cracking sound is heard, imitating a surfboard breaking, then a manic voice laughs and the Surfaris manager Dale Smallin says “Wipe out.”

This “afterthought” track went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 (#10 on the R&B chart), #5 in the UK and Canada and #46 in Germany. Wipe Out has been featured in more than 20 films and TV series since 1964.
