Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco (Nonesuch, 2002)

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was Chicago-based rock band Wilco’s fourth studio album. Originally completed in 2001, Wilco’s label at the time — Reprise — refused to release it. Wilco decided to leave the label and acquired the rights. In September 2001, the band streamed the entire album for free on their website. In November they signed with Nonesuch Records and the album received an official release in April 2002.

The album became a commercial and critical success and in the process became the band’s best selling album, selling half a million copies in the U.S. alone and peaked at #13 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart. The album cover features two towers in Marina City in Chicago. Due to the cover art and the fact that the album first appeared around the September 11th attacks, many parallels have been made. But Wilco maintain that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was recorded and completed before September 11, 2001.
