20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Pierre-Jules Hetzel, 1870)

This classic science fiction novel was written by French author Jules Verne. The novel tells the journey of a French professor and two companions that are held prisoner by Captain Nemo on his fantastical submarine and on the creatures and sights they see.

The novel was first translated in English in 1873. In the ensuing years, it has been re-translated an additional five times!

The novel has been adapted into 28 musicals, movies, cartoons, animes, audio books, radio dramas and additional novels.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea has been adapted into 12 comic book formats. The novel’s references in pop culture (including mentions in songs, movies and TV series, etc.) are too numerous to mention.
