Sister show to Guiding Light and running for 54 seasons (13,858 episodes), As the World Turns was the second-longest running daytime soap opera.
Set in Oakdale, Illinois, the show made it to the top of the Nielsen ratings in the fall of 1958. In 1959, the show began a weekly daytime ratings number one streak that wouldn’t be interrupted for over 12 years. The show became colorized August 21, 1967 and became an hour long on December 1, 1975. At its height As the World Turns had ten million viewers each day. It had its 10,000th episode May 12, 1995; its 50th anniversary April 2, 2006. On December 8, 2009, CBS announced it was cancelling the soap. The show taped its last episode June 23, 2010, which aired September 17, 2010. Three of the core actors on the soap (Helen Wagner aka Nancy Hughes, Don Hastings aka Dr. Robert “Bob” Hughes and Eileen Fulton aka Lisa Grimaldi) are three of the longest serving actors in the history of American soap operas. The show has won 43 Daytime Emmy awards.
