Awakenings (Columbia Pictures, 1990)

The 1990 drama was based on Oliver Sack’s 1973 memoir Awakenings. The story centers on a British neurologist who administers a drug to catatonic patients. These patients then have to cope with life in a different time.

The film was directed by Penny Marshall and starred Robert DeNiro, Robin Williams, Julie Kavner and Penelope Ann Miller. (Vin Diesel plays an uncredited hospital orderly.)

It opened in limited release in December 22, 1990, earning $417,076. It’s wide release date on January 11, 1991 saw it coming in second to Home Alone, which was in its ninth weekend, with just over $8 million. In total, the film has taken in over $52 million.
