Quantum Leap (NBC, 1989-1993)

NBC broadcasted Quantum Leap from March 29, 1989 to May 5, 1993, for five seasons or a total of 96 episodes. Donald P. Bellisario created the series because he liked the concept of a person living in the body of another person to make changes for the better.

Quantum Leap starred Scott Bakula as Dr. Sam Beckett, a quantum physicist who becomes lost in time during a time travel experiment and assumes the place of another person to “put right what once went wrong.” Dean Stockwell played Al Calavicci, Sam’s sidekick and best friend and a hologram that is visible to Sam, animals, young children and the mentally ill.

At the end of each episode, Sam leapt into the setting for the next episode; this became the show’s trademark.

Quantum Leap won two Golden Globes, five Emmys, a Director Guild of America award and two Edgar Awards. A series of 20 non-canon (they deviated from the series norms and attempted to explain conventions the show didn’t) novels were produced; a series of 13 comic books were produced and a rumored film has been “in the works” since 2002. All 96 episodes of all five seasons are available on DVD.
